Scars, all have a story to be told and deserve to be heard if the storyteller is willing to share…

What is Restore Scar Therapy?

RESTORE scar therapy treatments can help care for the health of your scar, the underlying and surrounding tissues. We can focus on issues related to a surgery or trauma injury such as:

  • pain after surgery or injury

  • limited ranges of movement or tightness

  • pulling or puckering

  • fibrous scar tissue or scar adhesions

  • tissue overhangs

Your appointment will include a specialist scar massage at the right pace and pressure to suit you; plus useful advice for caring for your scar at home, and treatment to support your general wellbeing with my existing physical therapy skills.

My treatments will integrate other soft tissue massage and myofascial release to best suit your symptoms and to provide the most holistic care approach.

A RESTORE scar therapy appointment within the first 6 months after a scar is created, is really helpful (even if you are not experiencing any unwanted complications), Sooner the better! But, it's never too late to benefit from scar treatment.

What results can I expect?

I aim to improve pain, sensitivity, tissue motility locally and globally of the scar/injury site, colour and texture of the skin.

Unfortunately, I cannot make your scar tissue disappear, as this is not physically possible, but the improvements aesthetically and physically are significant, helping to improve your quality of life with the scarring.

Results do vary and early treatment is recommended for best cosmetic improvements.

BUT IT IS NEVER TOO LATE! Old scars can benefit as well.

Why would you need and benefit from Scar Therapy?

As your body heals after an injury or surgery, scar tissue forms. Scar tissue is much less functional after Surgery (very dense and very strong but much less mobile). Adhesions may form, meaning that the layers of tissue beneath the skin stick together and this can restrict movement and limit the range of movement, not only at the site of injury/surgery, but more globally throughout the body, along the fascial lines. If left untreated, this can lead to further restrictions or injury at other joints/body sites, even impacting the function of organs beneath.

How Scar Therapy works:

Using the RESTORE methods of Scar Therapy, I aim to:

  • Stimulate change to scar tissue on the skin surface, and to adhesions or fibrosis in the underlying tissue using a variety of gentle and nurturing techniques.

  • Promote functional and cosmetic improvements after surgery or injury. Including reductions in redness, inflammation, smoothing the scar and surrounding tissues and increasing the mobility and motility of the scar and tissues linked fascially across the body.

  • Reduce common symptoms, such as pain, altered sensitivity and texture.

The RESTORE method has been developed by the UK's leading scar therapy teacher and Harley Street scar specialist, Emma Holly. RESTORE scar therapy method is used within the NHS and leading private health care providers. A course of treatment is usually recommended, but a single session and self-care advice for you to follow at home can be helpful. Gentle treatment with great results!

Examples of Scars and post surgery treatments I have worked with:

  • C-Sections

  • Hip replacement

  • Knee replacement

  • ACL reconstruction

  • Emergency Stomach Surgery

  • Hysterectomy

  • Lumpectomy

  • Mastectomy

  • Lymph node removal

  • Radiotherapy burns

  • Diep

KEY NOTES PRIOR TO TREATMENT:

  • Scar(s) must be at least 8 weeks old and fully healed (no infections, scabs or openings).

  • Treatment may not commence during radiotherapy and should wait at least 2 weeks post final radiotherapy treatment (to be confirmed with you medical care provider).

  • If there is a haematoma or if one is suspected, treatment may not commence until seen by a medical professional.

  • NO HERNIAS (the scarring is pivotal to the maintenance of the structure, regardless of if meshing is used).

  • Treatment on the torso when PREGNANT is not possible, other areas are possible and self-care advice can be provided.

  • In some cases a treatment will be possible but more on the surrounding tissues rather than on the scar itself e.g. with Keloid scars, or where pain is very present with significant inflammation.

Gentle techniques lead to dramatic changes to the whole body structure and alignment.

“What can I even say, Gemma completely changed my perspective on what is possible to achieve from therapy, thus changing my relationship with my own pain. Gemma is a genuine empath with a borderline magical sense of intuition and attention.

Let me put this into perspective, I broke my back ‘very badly’ 6 years ago and from the first session; straight off the bat, Gemma moved some pain that I had truly…well it was a part of me, just even the smallest relief from it would have been satisfactory, but I got so much more than that. I’m so careful who I let do anything to me; especially my back and not once has my body ever sent me even the slightest signal to be concerned, pure bliss. Those hands are medicine”.
